Two student in class

In the design lab at Alex Green Design Technology Magnet Elementary, students are challenged to think in differentstudent in ag lab ways. Rarely using pencil and paper, students are guided by STEAM teacher, Mary Jane Hollingsworth through month-long projects using the school’s focus to “create something, for someone, for some purpose.”

On any given day in February, fourth-graders are developing podcasts, first-graders are drawing using an online application and second-graders are producing stop motion graphics. The bright green seating fosters a Silicon Valley-inspired environment where the chairs allow for wiggling or alternative sitting styles, breaking away from the conventional classroom setup. For the third and fourth-grade students, the challenge is to select a bullying-related topic and express their opinions, either through interviews with classmates or by recording solo podcasts using online research. When the research and planning is complete, the students will use GarageBand to record the final episodes. The project seamlessly blends writing, research, student voice and technology.

When asked how they feel about recording a podcast, some students are nervous about doing something new. Another student, ironically dressed as a grandpa for the 100th day of school, has podcasted before and is excited to master his craft. Regardless of their mindsets, students are gradually becoming accustomed to thinking outside the box and stepping out of their comfort zones until it becomes second nature.

First-graders are still building their technology skills, practicing using their laptops, logins and Schoology applications. These basic skills, instilled at a young age, pave the way for seamless technology integrationstudent in class in the future. The class is tasked with identifying the emotions of a child in a photo and drawing a toy using an online tool to make the child happy. Drawings showed Pop Its, cars, houses, rainbows, robots, toy frogs and the inventive car house combination. The project gives students a chance to share something about themselves while exercising creative freedom.

At Alex Green Design Technology Magnet Elementary and many other MSAP magnet schools, students attend a related arts rotation specific to their theme. While the theme integrates into all classrooms, the dedicated design lab provides students with a full hour to focus on design technology and complete hands-on activities.
